Meaning of the Hanuman Chalisa in English
With the dust of the lotus feet of my Guru, I clean the mirror of my mind.
I sing the pure glory of Lord Rama, the greatest among Raghu’s descendants, which bestows the four fruits of life: Dharma (righteousness), Artha (prosperity), Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (liberation).
Knowing my mind to be ignorant, I meditate on you, O Son of the Wind (Hanuman).
Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove my miseries and impurities.
॥Doha॥
Hail, Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue.
Hail, Monkey Lord, illuminating the three worlds.
You are Rama’s messenger, the abode of matchless power,
And Anjani’s son, also called the son of the wind.
You are the great hero, endowed with valor.
You destroy evil thoughts and are the companion of good sense.
Your golden-hued body is dressed in beautiful clothes,
With earrings in your ears, and curly hair on your head.
You hold the thunderbolt and flag in your hands,
And wear the sacred thread across your shoulder.
You are the incarnation of Shiva and the delight of Kesari,
Your great power is revered by the whole world.
You are learned, virtuous, and very wise.
Always eager to perform the tasks of Rama.
You are engrossed in listening to the stories of Rama,
And reside in the hearts of Rama, Lakshman, and Sita.
Assuming a minute form, you appeared before Sita.
Assuming a fearsome form, you burnt Lanka.
Taking on a giant form, you destroyed the demons,
And fulfilled the mission of Lord Rama.
You brought the Sanjivani herb and revived Lakshman.
This made Lord Rama embrace you with joy.
Lord Rama praised you greatly,
And said you were as dear to him as his brother Bharat.
The thousand-headed Sheshnag sings your glory,
And says Lord Vishnu embraces you.
The sages like Sanak, the gods like Brahma,
Narada, Saraswati, and Shesha sing your glory.
Even Yama, Kubera, and the guardians of the directions,
Cannot express your glory in full.
You helped Sugriva by uniting him with Rama,
And brought him the throne of Kishkindha.
Vibhishan followed your advice,
And became the king of Lanka, known across the world.
You flew across the ocean with Lord Rama’s ring in your mouth,
Crossing the insurmountable ocean, a remarkable feat.
All the difficult tasks of the world become easy with your grace.
You are the gatekeeper of Rama’s kingdom.
No one can enter without your permission.
By seeking your refuge, one obtains all happiness.
With you as the protector, one need not fear anything.
When you roar, all three worlds tremble.
Ghosts and evil spirits cannot come near,
When your name is uttered, O Mahaveer.
You remove all diseases and alleviate all pain.
By constantly chanting your name, O Hanuman.
You rescue those in distress,
Who meditate on you with mind, deed, and word.
Rama is the supreme ascetic king,
And you carried out all his tasks.
Whoever brings any desire to you,
That wish is fulfilled in their lifetime.
Your glory pervades all four ages.
Your fame is radiantly spread across the world.
You are the protector of saints and sages,
The destroyer of demons, and dear to Lord Rama.
You are the bestower of the eight supernatural powers and nine treasures,
As granted to you by Mother Janaki.
You have the essence of devotion to Lord Rama.
You remain eternally the servant of Lord Raghupati (Rama).
By your devotion, one can attain Lord Rama.
And all the sufferings of many lifetimes are erased.
At the end of life, one attains Lord Rama’s abode.
And is reborn as a devotee of Hari (Lord Vishnu).
There is no need to worship any other deity.
All happiness is granted by serving Hanuman.
All difficulties are resolved, and all pains are removed,
For those who remember the mighty Hanuman.
**Victory, victory, victory to you, O
